I believe in the power of stories...I have always admired Storycorps for their ability to collect people's stories. Today i watched their animated shorts for 9/11. They brought tears to my eyes. What I think is wonderful about these stories is amidst great tragedy people are able to share their love for those they lost. That's one thing I love about Storycorps; all of their initiatives to preserve people's lives in their eyes and others. Anyone can share their story. Now go watch.

Lunch

I was making lunch today and was struck by the light in my kitchen. This is the beginning of a tuna salad. One of the reasons I love summer is the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. I'm not much of a successful gardener though, even though I have tried with pots on my patio. The good thing for me is there are excellent farmer's markets where I live.

Ever since working with animation this past spring, I just seem to keep doing more. I decided this summer to animate something everyday. To start out with, I have been picking basic, but important actions a ball bouncing, a door shutting. I taught myself how to animate in Photoshop which has been interesting. Here is something I "threw together" the other night.

I said there would be more! If you have not seen my animation yet check my precious post! Two weekends ago I went down to Baton Rouge. While there I caught a Mardis Gras parade. I took my camera and took some pictures. It was great because for a night parade there were lots of lights on the floats. I had more light to shoot with. Here are two of my favorites.

Wow! It's been way to long since posting. Don't fret, I am back! I have been doing a lot more video recently. With video you have to do more then just put pictures up on a blog so I got a little behind with posting. OK very behind. Don't judge, life also got in the way. I started a vimeo page to showcase some of my work. I just put up some animation work that I have done in my animation class. Go to http://vimeo.com/user3809907/videos to see two of them! It's a little different from my photography, but it has been really great. I have always loved to draw so I have enjoyed the options animation has given me. I drew the figures and then digitally scanned them. After cutting out the pieces I wanted in photoshop, I uploaded them to After Effects. There I did the animating. I have more photos to put up as well. My trip to Baton Rouge this past weekend(not from this summer) is next in line to blog about!

I just realized how long ago I have posted. Wow it's been too long. I've been working more on video which has been great but recently I did a moving stills project which was fun. I will have to post that soon. I'll also have to post some of my video work. Sunday morning I am doing a Holiday Card shoot with some old friends of mine. I am very excited to capture this great family of three. I was thinking what can be better then capturing love? This summer I had the joy of photographing another dear friend and her adorable family of four. It feels so good to be behind the camera with the ability to photograph these wonderful moments of people's lives.

Part 1

Finding the heart

Last July I took a little road trip. From Atlanta, GA , to Baton Rouge, LA , to St Bernard Parish, to Plaquemines Parish, then back to Baton Rouge, then to Alamaba then back home. I was gone for a week.

I wanted to find oil. I wanted to drive down to Louisiana and see for myself and share it with the world. But I had a short window, a time limit, and strict laws that kept citizens and media away from clean up efforts. Even if I did not get pictures of tar balls or birds dripping with oil, I still saw a great influence of oil. The influence of the spill was everywhere; in signs blockades, etc.

Here is a piece of what I found. I picked these in particular because they showed a sense of what was going on, in an unobtrusive way.

But that is no reason to ignore your blog...at all. To say things have been busy is a poor excuse. Because really there is no excuse for not updating your blog. So instead I offer an explanation which will also give a preview of things to come. I recently took a road trip down south to see friends, babies, and whatever evidence of oil in the gulf coast that I could find. Luckily I have pictures of all three! And yes all three were taken without crossing any barricades. This applies to the last one. So we will have pictures from several sessions soon. Also, I am helping wrap up my summer project that was in conjunction with a professor and staff member from Virginia Tech. So now that I have revealed what I am doing, I have no excuse for not posting them, soon!

Summer Solstice Festival

I love summer. I pretty much love all of the seasons, but the long days of summer are fantastic. To celebrate the longest day of the year, I grabbed my camera and headed to The Summer Solstice Festival in Greensboro NC. Located at the Greensboro Arboretum in Lindley Park, lots of people came out in their colorful outfits. I had a good time at this family friendly event. I even ran into some good friends of mine(pictures of them to come later).

Vendors set up booths to sell an array of wares. Many of the goods had an earth friendly or earth goddess theme to them.

A window I grew up looking at. I've shot this window atleast 3 or 4 times, all different formats. This one is DSLR. I have a medium format and a large format of this as well. For now I'll just show the digital format one that I took today.

I took this sometime in the late afternoon. Not quite when it was starting to set and really glow. Summer evening light is so much different from winter evening light. For the past several years I feel like I've just watched light during what is known as the golden hour. In all honesty I have, because that's my favorite time to shoot.

Reading Terminal Market

When I went to Philadelphia last March to see my longtime friend Lauren, we had a great time. It was raining though so we had to stick to indoor activities. Let me clarify it wasn't just raining, it was POURING so much that it flooded places. Luckily the Reading Terminal Market is indoors. I had never been to this famous farmers market. Lauren warned me that there was a lot to see and eat! These are just a few of these moments I captured.

HDR

If you don't know what HDR is, it is the process of taking several images and having them layered together by either Photoshop or another computer program. It stands for High Dynamic Range Imaging. I feel like this is a little controversial in the photojournalism world. Some people feel that it is manipulating things a little too much. It's a cool effect but is it showing reality? When I do them I like to make it clear that they are HDR. This was taken in the Pisgah Covered Bridge area in NC.

Yesterday I worked with the digital leaf back at school. For those that don't know a digital leaf back is the digital back one can use on a medium formate and large format camera. There is of course software and equipment and etc etc that goes with it. I shot it tethered as well. This picture was a great collaborative effort with Justin Mower. Not only did he model, but we worked together to get the lighting that way. He also had some creative toning ideas that he shared with me, when he toned the copies for himself. I toned this one myself.

I had a story in my head when I did this photo shoot. I am curious to know how it is interpreted. I realized that a lot of time the photography isn't about me necessarily but the viewers. Let me know what you think. I did try to stay away from being too overdone.

I have been working hard on doing more with lighting. Now that I have started I love what can be done. Shooting in natural light, I faced her back towards the sun to give her the nice hair light. I then positioned myself where flare wasn't hitting my lens. To brighten her face I used a flash on a light stands triggered with pocket wizards. Thanks to Jason for posing! It was pretty windy and very cold. I have been working on shooting people and lighting them well, key word well. I have always favored a more candid look. This is what I came up with last week while experimenting with a telephoto. I used a Vivitar 285 with pocket wizards on a light stand. The sun acted as a great light for a background. I shot this around 5 pm.

Yes this is my hand. I used to do a lot of realistic drawing. My hand was the best thing to draw when I was practicing. It was always there and provided nice detail. Once again it came in use tonight while I was helping set up a Christmas tree. The person helping me took a break just as I started snapping. Plus I wanted to do a detail shot and once again my hand proved to be a good model( I could have said my hand was handy but really not even funny) The tree is unfinished right now, but will hopefully be done in the morning.

As quickly as the snow came it melted. Pretty to look at for a bit. So in reality it stayed a bit dicey. Saturday was the worst. Most of the back roads were not plowed, so it was hard to get out depending on where you lived. Today, Monday, as you can see was pretty clear, especially from the bit of the road in the background. I should have taken pictures of the craziness of people Holiday shopping now that they could actually get out and do it. But instead of seeing people in a frenzy I leave you with another scenic view. This was the same front yard of my parent's house that I showed two posts ago. The last post was from their side door.

I took this early afternoon yesterday. We didn't know how bad it would actually be. It wasn't too bad in the grand scheme of things. Did it cause my friends to get stranded on the way back from PA? Yes. Did a lot of people get in wrecks yesterday because of the weather? Yes. We just aren't prepared for the snow here in the south!

I'm guessing that most people by now have either experienced or heard about the snow that dumped down in NC. Not all places were hit I hear. Well or at least that is what people are updating anyway on facebook. The snow started yesterday during the day and continued into the night, This morning we had winter wonderland. Holiday happenings in the low country!

Christmas Season is under full swing everywhere. This weekend was a highlight for the holiday season as trees were lit and parades were held. I covered two parades one on land and the other on water! I have tried to come up with a paragraph of text to go along with these photos. See I love knowing everything that is going on in a slice of time. Even though you can show something in a picture, no matter how good you are at capturing the whole picture there is always more that you can show. Which is part of my love of video and multi media. If I had taken a zoom recorder and recorded the sound of the bridge, including when I got yelled at for accidentally being in the biking lane( if you aren't familiar with the Brooklyn Bridge, it is split into 2 lanes biking and walking. I have found this is pretty common for bride walking paths. Or at least the few I have been on.) Incidentally I got yelled at, because I was too busy taking pictures rather then paying attention to where I was walking. But photography alone, I think these photos show a pretty good essence of New York.

Last week was fair week here in Charleston SC(my home for the next couple of months while I'm on internship). I had a lot of fun going and have been told it's likely I will go more! Not only did I get to take pictures, but I also accompanied the video taping of a food review for the fair. Not only do I do still photography with the paper, but I get to do video also. A New York Minute....more then one

That, and a great place to take pictures. The light level was a little hard though. Without a flash, which I chose not to use because it would be annoying to people. The past two weeks have been a whirl, I am currently at an internship with the Post and Courier in Charleston, SC as a staff photographer and video editor. At the same time I have been working on officially launching my own arts, photography, and video based production company. My new title for the blog revels the name. On the same day that I captured the last picture( a gorgeous day by the way). I ran across tree climbers. Participants of the International Tree Climbing Convention were spending time in the trees in a communicative way. I love this picture because it shows people enjoying the tree. They don't use cleats and use protective covers for their ropes.

I was inspired by old industrial photographs of steel mills recently after doing copious amounts of research for a project. Along with my love of Nature, I also hate to see man's often negative impact on the out of doors that I treasure so much. Seeing photos of Margaret Bourke-White as I was writing my paper inspired me to try to capture the the tangle of two often colliding worlds. If you don't know her work, she is known for photographing Industrial Steel Mills, and other pieces of the industrial revolution.

Friday Night Football Part 1

if you had asked me a year ago about football, I would have known very little about it. Quarterback and touchdown were the only vocabulary I really knew pertaining to a game. That all changed two months ago, when we learned how to shoot football. Since then I have been spending every Friday night now not just watching football, but shooting Friday Night Football. I knew it would be a challenge, dark, and hard to see. What I did not know is that I would love shooting football. Yes I love taking pictures of Friday night football. A few weeks ago we had an assignment to do a multimedia story. We have three topics we have to cover over the semester. We can choose what order to do them in. For my first one, I choose the topic of second community. While covering this story I discovered a great coffee shop called Tate Street Coffee in Greensboro, NC. To many people this was a second home. There were many regulars and the owner Matt knows them well. I have to say this coffee shop had a great friendly atmosphere. Matt was so welcoming I can see why people keep coming back. I took tons of shots but here is my favorite. I like it so much it's in my portfolio for internships.

When we got the assignment to go to the pet expo we were not sure what to expect. Another student and I went out with a staff photographer. All three of us ended up having a great time. Yesterday I had the oppurtunity to go and spend the day with the photographer's at the Charlotte Observer. While there I was sent on assignment with a staff photographer. We went to the fourth anual Pet Expo and had a great time. The paper used a couple of my pictures in a slideshow, along with a fellow student's and the staff photographer. Downtown Assignment

Downtown Winston-Salem, NC is a place that is trying really hard to transform itself. A couple of summers ago the city started several free downtown activities during the summer to attract people. Every Saturday they shut down a the area known as Avenue of the Arts for live music. I decided that it would be a great subject for one of my weekly three picture package assignments.

I think the time of day with the summer light fading adds a great touch.

Diva NIght at Dish'n Paint Your Own Pottery

One of the great things about being a photojournalism student is that I get to find out about all the things going on in my community. I never knew Dish'n paint your own pottery existed until I went to photograph them during Diva Night. Held throughout the years on Thursday nights, woman come to chat and paint pottery. Here are some pictures from my shoot I did for a three picture package. I had a great time hanging out with these ladies and will be back for the next Diva night!

Last semester we scanned film from our first two semesters of the program for our online gallery. The gallery was supposed to consist of our best images from summer and fall of our first year. We shot mostly in film for our first year with medium format cameras. I came across these digital scans the other day in my Lightroom catalog. I didn't put them in my online gallery but wanted to share them now.

In downtown Asheboro there is a farmers market that runs three times a week from May through Ocotober. I took this picture while shooting for an assignment. When I approached one vendor he immediately suggested that I take a picture of his eggplant. I did and ended up using it for the main picture!

Remembering Virginia Tech

I have said before that I spent a large part of my vacation in Blacksburg, VA. While there I visited the Virgina Tech Memorial of the April 16, 2007 shooting. I wanted to share not only the pictures of the memorial, but also the story of how the memorial was inspired by student action.

Immediately after the shooting, students gathered at a spot close to where the second and most brutal shooting occurred. The students placed 32 stones in a semi circle facing the main administration building. If you have been to VT you know that almost all of their buildings are made of a certain type of stone called Hokie stone. The stone pieces are seen as a part of VT and were fitting for the memorial. On each stone people placed flowers, pictures, candles, and anything else they felt could best honor their friends and family. Using the student's memorial as inspiration, the school made a permanent version of it. The memorial was dedicated April 16, 2008 a year after the shooting.

A plaque lies in the center of the memorial with some of the words that were written and spoken by Nikki Giovanni, a professor at VT. These words were written and used in honor of the tragedy.

I got started on my new blog look over break, but I'm still posting pictures from break. I mainly took pictures in Blacksburg, Virginia; at Virginia Tech. They have a beautiful flower garden that is used for their horticulture program. I shot the following on a bright and sunny day with all natural light. My D90 was used for all of the photos. Here are three of my favorites from the photo shoot.

After going to Charlottesville, I crossed over to Blacksburg VA. I took several pictures of flowers while there. This was my favorite from my grandmother's garden. After some searching on the internet, I found that they were Strobilanthes dyerianus aka Persian Shield

Crabtree Falls

After summer session, I have two weeks off! With both of us being lovers of the outdoors we try to go on hiking adventures together. This trip we headed south to Crabtee Falls. Let me tell you, I had to put my camera away in order to concentrate on the strenuous hike, but I did get a few good shots . This one in particular shows only one part of the falls. It actually goes up for about 2 miles of the 3 mile hike.

After days and days of gloom the sign is now shining. This is kind of amazing because it has been so cloudy for the past several days. Now we have sun, and I can not wait to go run.

Done with finals, I am filled with restlessness. There are plenty of things to do. Insurance issues to deal with, cleaning, figuring a new budget for 2009, drawing, are all things I could be doing now. This is the first day in months that I am not doing something for school. I don't really know what to do with myself.

A part of me feels like I should go out and take pictures. Like it's become such a part of me, I almost feel lost when I'm not doing some aspect of photography. In more ways then one my world has completely changed since August. I'm grateful for the changes.

Wait what is going on? Where are all the previous posts? I took them all down in order to pave the way for a new direction of my blog. As everyone can see on the right of their screen I have an etsy shop. (If you have not looked at it please take a minute to do so). In between school and my personal life, I am officially in business to sell my art and creations. To reflect this journey I'm going to be pushing my blog in a direction I've wanted to go to for a long time. I'm merging my desire to live a thrifty green life and my thoughts on my business and the world into this neat little blog.
